Tobacco Free Florida Week 2014
According to the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence, A U.S. Public Health Service Report, the first step in treating tobacco use and dependence is to identify tobacco users. At least 70% of smokers see a physician each year, and almost one third see a dentist. Therefore, virtually all clinicians are in a position to intervene with patients who use tobacco products. Moreover, 70% of smokers report wanting to quit and almost two thirds of smokers who relapse want to try quitting again within 30 days. Smokers cite a physician’s advice to quit as an important motivator to stop smoking.
Governor Rick Scott has proclaimed April 21-27, 2014 as Tobacco Free Florida Week 2014 to educate health-care providers and their patients about the program’s free resources and the health benefits of quitting. A copy of the Governor’s Proclamation is attached for your review.
